Generator Subsidy — 25% Up to ₹5 Lakh for Tamil Nadu MSMEs — Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions founders most often ask about Generator Subsidy — 25% Up to ₹5 Lakh for Tamil Nadu MSMEs — who qualifies, the funding amount, required documents and how the application works.
Frequently asked questions
How much funding does the Generator Subsidy provide?
The scheme pays 25% of the actual cost of the generator you purchase, with the total subsidy capped at ₹5,00,000. So the payout depends on your invoice value — a generator costing ₹12 lakh would attract ₹3 lakh, while anything costing ₹20 lakh or more would hit the ₹5 lakh ceiling.
Which enterprises are eligible to apply?
All new and existing Micro, Small and Medium Manufacturing Enterprises are eligible. There is no restriction that favours only newly formed units — a factory that has been running for years can apply just as a unit that is setting up can.
Is there a limit on the size of the generator I can buy?
Yes. The subsidy applies to generators with a capacity of up to 320 KVA. A set larger than that falls outside the scheme.
What is the deadline to apply?
There is no fixed last date — applications are accepted on a rolling basis. However, you must submit your application within six months of either the date you purchased the generator set or the date the safety certificate was issued by the Electrical Inspectorate Department, whichever is later.
Does the scheme take equity in my company or require repayment?
No. This is a government subsidy, so the amount is not repaid and the department does not take any equity or ownership stake in your business in exchange for the support.
Do I need DPIIT recognition or MSME registration to apply?
The scheme's stated eligibility criteria do not list a DPIIT recognition or Udyam/MSME registration requirement. Eligibility is defined by being a manufacturing MSME and by the generator being within the 320 KVA capacity limit. You do, however, need to register on the state MSME portal to file the application.
Where and how do I apply?
Application is entirely online through the official portal of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. You register on msmeonline.tn.gov.in with your name, date of birth, Aadhaar, email and mobile number, and create a password of at least eight characters containing one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter and one number. After logging in, you select the Generator Subsidy scheme under 'Schemes', start a new application, note the reference number, upload your documents and submit. Scheme information is also published at msmetamilnadu.tn.gov.in.
What documents or details will I need to provide?
At registration the portal asks for basic details including your name, date of birth, Aadhaar, email ID and mobile number. The application form itself has mandatory fields covering the generator purchase, and the department verifies the safety certificate issued for the set. All mandatory documents must be uploaded through the portal's document upload section in the prescribed format and file size, and you can check each upload using the 'View' option before submitting.
Who reviews my application and what do they check?
Applications are examined by the relevant department — the General Manager / District Industries Centre (GM/DIC) and the Regional Joint Director (RJD). The review is a verification process covering your eligibility, the documents you submitted, the details of the generator purchase and the safety certificates.
Can I track my application after submitting it?
Yes. Once you submit, a confirmation message is sent to your mobile, and you can check the status of your application on the portal using the tracking link provided there.
