What is the total funding amount available?

In Round 1, up to 120 winners each receive ₹1 lakh as a cash appreciation grant. In Round 2, the top projects can receive an RDI grant of up to ₹25 lakhs per project, disbursed in two tranches — ₹15 lakhs and ₹10 lakhs — based on milestone achievement.

What is the deadline to apply?

Applications are accepted on a rolling monthly basis from November 2025 to October 2026. The application window opens on the 1st and closes on the 20th of each month.

Who can apply?

Any Indian national holding a valid Aadhaar number can apply. Individuals or teams of up to 5 members may apply. Students, PhD scholars, researchers, scientists, and startup founders or employees are welcome. Institutional affiliation is not required for Round 1, but is mandatory for Round 2.

Which sectors or fields do you focus on?

The challenge supports biotechnological solutions in health and pharma, agriculture and food, as well as climate and energy. Proposals should be sustainable, scalable, and aligned with the BioE3 framework.

Is this a grant or does it take equity?

This is a grant-based challenge under the non-dilutive category. Winners receive cash grants without giving up any equity or stake in their venture.

What documents are needed to apply?

Your proposal must be submitted as a 1500-word concept document on the BRIC-ILS Portal. The proposal should cover Concept Summary, Design Logic, BioE3 Linkage, Feasibility and Safety, Sustainability and Impact, and Novelty. A valid Aadhaar number is required for registration. No other documents are mentioned.

How do I apply?

Register and submit your concept proposal on the BRIC-ILS D.E.S.I.G.N. Portal at https://www.ils.res.in/bioe3challenge/. Applications open on the 1st of each month and close on the 20th.

Can I apply as a team?

Yes, teams of up to 5 members are allowed. Each member must be an Indian national with a valid Aadhaar number.

What happens after I win Round 1?

As a Round 1 winner, you will receive ₹1 lakh and mentorship. You have 3 months from the award to submit a detailed project proposal to BIRAC for Round 2 RDI funding of up to ₹25 lakhs. Funding is released in two tranches based on achieving milestones.

Is there any application fee?

No, there is no entry fee. Application is completely free.

Is DPIIT recognition required for D.E.S.I.G.N. for BioE3 Challenge?
